CBSE Thinks it is Like CBI, But That's Not So

In a bid to ease the burden on students, the Madras High Court has directed the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to warn its affiliated schools to either follow the court diktat and ban homework for Class I and II students or be ready to face strict action.

On May 30, Madras HC had instructed the CBSE to reduce the weight of bags of school children and do away with homework for classes I and II. The court went to the extent of asking CBSE to set up flying squads in schools to check if there is any violation of the court order.

No Homework for kids in CBSE schools After Class 2

Schoolchildren are neither weightlifters nor school bags load containers, the Madras High Court said on Tuesday, and asked the Centre to instruct state governments and Union Territories to reduce weight of satchels of school children and do away with homework for classes I and II.

“Neither children are weightlifters nor school bags load containers,” Justice Kirubakaran said before directing the Centre to formulate a policy forthwith on the lines of the Children School Bags (Limitation on Weight) Bill, 2006. 

The High Court further asked the CBSE to set up flying squads to ensure that schools follow the order and don’t violate the no-homework rule. 

It has also directed the Centre and NCERT to file a report in four weeks on the same. 

The court directed the Centre to order states to stop use of non-prescribed books.
